One of the things I want to add is "why is World of Warcraft compared to similar games?" The feedback loop is real and effective, but you can say a lot about MMORPG. The other part of the question is what's special about this particular thing? For me, there are several main things:

Before the release of World of Warcraft, the barriers to entry into MMO were high because they were mysterious. Just like Bob Ross and Van Gogh - Bob Ross's paintings look more like the subject of painting, but once you look at one, you'll see the whole picture. Many of these MMOs are like Three hours of "giant spider Golf Course". "World of Warcraft" is more like Van Gogh - OK, maybe the "star night" is not similar to the real photos of the star night, but Van Gogh's imagination makes it different. OK, maybe your character has a pan hand, it looks like he's on steroids, but you can go to more interesting places.
